What We Need To Survive

October 21, 2018
Morning Service

Four things science tells us we can’t survive without:

1. Water   2. Air   3. Food   4. Light

1) Water… If you watch any of the survival type reality shows you will see one of the first things they seek out is water. Adult bodies are 50-65% water. Water is the primary building block of cells, it acts as an insulator regulating internal body temperature, is needed to metabolize proteins and carbs used as food, lubricates joints, insulates the brain spinal cord and organs, flushes toxins from the body, dissolves minerals and nutrients and carries oxygen and nutrients to cells. Water is pretty important to life.

John 4: 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

Jesus is living water and whoever drinks of this water will never thirst! It crossed my mind does this mean we will have no need for water in heaven? I don’t know. We know our bodies will be transformed and we know Jesus will be there so maybe will be the case but then again what started this conversation was Jesus asking the woman to draw water for him. The woman at the well asked for this water that she might never thirst again. We know this living water refers to spiritual thirsting so we too should seek this water that our souls will never thirst.

2) Air…  We breathe in air and the most important part of air is oxygen, without which the human body will only last a few minutes. All plants and animals need oxygen to survive. As our heart pumps blood through our bodies the lungs oxygenate the blood sending it to every cell of our body.   Gen. 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.       Job 33: 4 The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.

John 1: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All  things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and  the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

In a nutshell from vs. 14 we know that Jesus breathed life into man.

3) Food…  The food we eat is converted usually to glucose, which powers the cells in our bodies, which in turn feed the organs through blood. Food fuels our bodies, gives us energy to go about our daily routine.                                       John 6: 35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.             Vs. 51  I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

4) Light… Light is necessary for the survival of life on Earth, as almost all energy used by life is derived from the sun. Plants convert light energy into chemical energy by photosynthesis. Animals eat the plants, which in turn energize their bodies. Of course we eat both plants and animals to energize our bodies. Without light the earth would be dark and cold.

John 8: 12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”                                                                                                So what is science telling us? Our physical bodies need Water, Air, Food and Light to survive. Jesus says he is the Living Water, He breathed air into us, He is the Bread of Life and He is the Light of the world. In conclusion science, in my opinion, is telling us we need Jesus! Jesus supplies what we need to survive beyond our physical bodies. It’s difficult for humans to think beyond life as we know it. Yes we read of eternal life and the world to come and in faith we accept it and we can, in our human minds, envision it. In reality it will be far more than what we can imagine in our finite minds. We imagine and envision based on what we know and have seen on this earth. It will be far greater than anything this earth can offer.

1 Corinthians 2:9

But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Prayer: Dear Lord help us to see that you are what we need for not only our physical health and well being but our spiritual health and well being as also. Place within us a hunger for your word that we might be strengthened and encouraged. Amen
