I Tim. 2:1-7

Review:

1.      After being able to establish a congregation of believers in Thessalonica, Paul later writes back to them, the letter of I Thessalonians.  In this letter the Apostle says this;  1Th 3:1-2  Therefore when we could no longer endure, we were pleased to be left at Athens alone.  (2)  And we sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and to comfort you concerning your faith.

2.      What was it that Timothy knew concerning the faith that would establish, and comfort these believers?

3.      This is why we came to I Timothy, to see what the Apostle had taught him in order to have such trust, and confidence in his ability to establish, and comfort these believers.

4.      You see it’s like the Apostle is telling the church that meets at 755 Diana street, learn the things that I taught Timothy, and you shall be established, and comforted.

5.     In chapter one we saw Paul speak of a past charge that Timothy had received;  1Ti 1:3  Even as I begged you to remain at Ephesus, when I was going to Macedonia, that you might charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

6.      Then we saw Paul’s first charge to Timothy;  “that you may wage the good warfare.”

So as we continue in I Timothy, and see what God has for us this morning, we begin to see what it is that Timothy knew, and would teach, that would comfort, and establish all churches.

1Ti 2:1-15 ASV  I exhort therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings, be made for all men;  (2)  for kings and all that are in high place; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and gravity.

  • God wants us to pray for all those in authority.  Paul explains it more thoroughly  to the Romans;  Rom 13:1  Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the powers that be are ordained of God.  Rom 13:2  Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment.  Rom 13:3  For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same: Rom 13:4  for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil.  Rom 13:5  Wherefore ye must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience' sake.  Rom 13:6  For this cause ye pay tribute also; for they are ministers of God's service, attending continually upon this very thing.  Rom 13:7  Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.
  • The powers that be are ordained of God.  Paul told the church at Ephesus; Eph 1:11 KJVR  In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
  • This is our comfort in all the things that are going on today, that the Lord is in control, and is working all things after the counsel of His own will.
  • And the reason for praying for leaders, maybe we don’t agree with?  That we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness, and gravity.  We are not to be a loud, and boisterous people, but gentle, and quiet.

(3)  This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

  • This is one of God’s expectations for His people.

(4)  who would have all men to be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth.

  • Peter said; 2Pe 3:9 KJVR  The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

(5)  For there is one God,

  • Exo 20:1-3 KJVR  And God spoke all these words, saying,  (2)  I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  (3)  Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
  • Mal 2:10  Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us?
  • Mar 12:29-32 KJVR  And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:  (30)  And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.  (32)  And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
  • The woman at the well;  Joh 4:24 KJVR  God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.  Jesus had just told Nicodemus concerning the Spirit of God;  Joh 3:8 KJVR  The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
  • Paul said; 1Co 8:6  But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
  • Eph 4:6  One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
  • James said;  Jam 2:19  Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
  • We find that this one God, Whom, throughout Jesus’ ministry called His Father, is the Holy Ghost, the eternal Almighty God.  Mat 1:18 KJVR  Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Then Paul says;

one mediator also between God and men, himself man, Christ Jesus,

  • Heb 8:6  But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
  • Heb 9:15  And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament.
  • Heb 12:24  And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant.
  • Mar 16:19  So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
  • Act 7:55  But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, Act 7:56  And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
  • Not only is Christ our mediator, but our intercessor;  Rom 8:34  Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
  • Heb 4:14  Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
  • 1Jo 1:9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(6)  who gave himself a ransom for all; the testimony to be borne in its own times;

  • All means everyone.  The vilest sinner you know, Jesus died for him to be saved.  Paul himself stated that he was “chief of sinners.”

(7)  whereunto I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I speak the truth, I lie not), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE CHARGE THAT PAUL GAVE TIMOTHY.  THE TEACHINGS THAT ARE TO COMFORT, AND ESTABLISH THE CHURCH NO MATTER WHERE IT IS MEETING.  “I WOULD THAT YOU ALL SPEAK THE SAME THING.”

COMFORT, AND ESTABLISH THE CHURCH.

BE COMFORTED THAT GOD IS IN CONTROL.

BE ESTABLISHED IN THE UNITY OF THE WORD.
