Mother's Day

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL YOU MOTHERS.

The modern Mother's Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis and it's now celebrated on various days in many places around the world. This holiday is relatively modern, being created at the start of the 20th century, and should not be confused with the early pagan and Christian traditions honoring mothers, or with the 16th century celebration of Mothering Sunday, which is also known as Mother's Day in the UK.

For some of us Mother’s Day is a time of memories, our parents have passed on.  For those of you who are fortunate enough to still have your parents with you, listen to the admonition of the Lord.

·         Exo 20:12  Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

·         Pro 1:8  My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

This admonition from Solomon is found several times in the book of Proverbs.

Jesus said;

Mat 15:4  For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

The Apostle Paul closes the Ephesian letter with this;

Eph 6:1-3  Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.  (2)  Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;  (3)  That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

We just finished the letter to the Hebrews, and its great faith chapter 11, mentioning many of the great people that pleased God, and overcame difficult situations by their faith.

I believe that this is something that God gives to every Mother, great faith.

  • I remember when my brother Jon was in Vietnam, our Mother wore out her knees praying for him.
  • I remember when I was growing up, and heading down the wrong path, all the many times she tried to tell me what lay ahead, and I wouldn’t listen.  I think of all the worry, and concern I caused her.

Then I think of the Mothers in the Bible, just to mention three this morning;

  • The Shunammite Mother;   And the Prophet Elijah.
  • Elisabeth, the Mother of John the Baptist.
  • Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

All these women had one thing in common, great faith, and a close relationship with God Almighty.

God has given no one on this earth a better, and more precious gift than to be a Mother.

I want to close this morning with this poem from a dear departed friend, and a wonderful Mother.  Avis Flora.

My closing prayer this morning would be that He would continue to bless, and guide all the Mothers, and future Mothers to a closer relationship with Him.
