Blessed Be The King That Comes In The Name Of The Lord!

Luke 19:28-48

Review:

  • Today is Palm Sunday, the beginning of the last week Jesus spent on earth in His earthly body.  After His glorious resurrection He spent 40 days with His disciples speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
  • On Wednesday evening Bible study, we’ve been looking at the parables of the Lord.  Last Wednesday we were in chapter 17 of Luke.

1.       The Lord spoke concerning OFFENSES.

2.      He cleansed 10 lepers, in which only one came back to praise Him.

3.      Then He taught on the second coming.

4.      In chapter 18, Greg led the week before in the discussion of the woman and the judge, showing that persistency in prayer pays off.

  • There are other topics in chapter 18, and 19 before we get to His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, but one stands out for us today.  Jesus tells His disciples that He must go into Jerusalem, to suffer, die, and be resurrected.

Luk 18:31-34  Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.  (32)  For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on:  (33)  And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.  (34)  And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.

BUT HE KNEW:  And went right on, healing blind Bartimaeus, spending time at the house of Zacchaeus, the tax collector.  Telling them that He had come to save those which were lost.

Then giving the parable of the Ten Minas.  To sum up this parable would be to understand that those who have accepted Christ, and have done their best with the talents He has given them, will be given more in the Kingdom to come, and those who have rejected Christ will be brought before Him and destroyed.

BUT NOW IT IS TIME TO BEGIN FULFILLING ALL THINGS TOLD BY THE PROPHETS CONCERNING THE MESSIAH.

Luk 19:28-48  And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.  (29)  And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,  (30)  Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.  (31)  And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.  (32)  And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.  (33)  And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?  (34)  And they said, The Lord hath need of him.  (35)  And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.

  • Jesus uses, and fulfills this illustration of prophecy from Zec 9:9  Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
  • Rejoice greatly.  SHOUT.  Oh what this would have meant to those who were in tune with God, and was awaiting the coming Messiah.
  • Your King is coming.  He is King of kings, and Lord of lords.
  • He is just.  Thank God He is just.  We are in the hands of a just, and impartial judge.
  • And He has salvation.  Peter said, “there is none other name given among men, whereby we must saved.”  There is salvation in none other.
  • He wasn’t proud, but lowly, humble, the Son of Man, yet the very Son of God.
  • WHAT FOLLOWS IS SPONTANEOUS  WORSHIP, AND PRAISE.  WHEN THE CONDITIONS, AND CIRCUMSTANCES ARE RIGHT THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS.  THANKFULNESS, AND PRAISE.
  • SHOULDN’T WE BE THANKFUL THAT THIS IS THE TYPE OF KING WE HAVE?  ONE WHO IS JUST, HUMBLE, AND IS ABLE TO GIVE YOU SALVATION.  WE SHOULD PRAISE HIM WITH GENUINE ENTHUSIASM.   NOW NOTICE.

(36)  And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.  (37)  And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;

  • Notice;  they began to rejoice, and praise God with a loud voice.
  • Why?  Because of all the mighty works that they had seen.
  • He is still doing great, and mighty works.  I have heard some terrific testimonies of late.  I know He is still in the life changing business if we only trust Him for it.  Don’t limit this Great, and Mighty King that we have, nothing is impossible for Him.

(38)  Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

  • This is the way it will be for us;  We’ll say, “there He is, thank God He has come for His church.”  We will be dancing, and shouting just like these people that see Him entering Jerusalem.
  • But just as we will be rejoicing, there will be those like the following Pharisees.

(39)  And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.

  • Master, or Teacher, control your disciples.  What they really meant was, “all this praise, and attention you are getting is bothering us.”

(40)  And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

  • And what Jesus is telling them is that IT IS TIME TO PRAISE GOD.
  • It is just like us today, there is a time to praise Him, or give to Him, and a time to receive from Him, and time to praise Him for giving us to receive.

(41)  And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,  (42)  Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.  (43)  For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,  (44)  And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

In the midst of all this praise, and rejoicing Jesus finds time to weep over Jerusalem.  He felt sad for them that their eyes had been blinded concerning the things God was doing.  We do not want to be found in this state.

Then He tells of the destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of Titus, the Roman general.

Because they knew not the time of thy visitation:

CHURCH, OUR KING IS COMING, AND HE WILL NOT DELAY.  AT THE APPOINTED TIME THE TRUMPET WILL SOUND, AND OUR KING SHALL APPEAR TO TAKE US HOME.

I TRUST YOU ARE MAKING PREPARATIONS TO GO WITH HIM.

MY PRAYER THIS MORNING IS THAT GOD WILL CONTINUE TO MINISTER TO US, SO THAT WE DON’T MISS HIS TIME OF VISITATION.
